Designed to embrace the natural contours of the land and the beauty of the surrounding grove, this La Grange residence is perched near the top of the property to take full advantage of long-range views. The staggered cross gables and layered rooflines were carefully planned to open the home to the west while offering strategic shading for the Texas sun. From site orientation to interior finishes, every design move reflects a balance of comfort, durability, and connection to the landscape.

DESIGN BRIEF
Designed to embrace the natural contours of the land and the beauty of the surrounding grove, this La Grange residence is perched near the top of the property to take full advantage of long-range views. The staggered cross gables and layered rooflines were carefully planned to open the home to the west while offering strategic shading for the Texas sun. From site orientation to interior finishes, every design move reflects a balance of comfort, durability, and connection to the landscape.
The home steps gently down the site in three main sections, aligning the interiors to sweeping views of the north and west. To mitigate the intense setting sun, each living zone is paired with its own deep covered patio—creating shaded outdoor living spaces that flow seamlessly from the interior, particularly off the main living area.
The kitchen was positioned with intention—framed by windows on three sides to capture views and bathe the space in natural light throughout the day. From sunrise to sunset, it offers a visual connection to the land while remaining the warm heart of the home.
Generous in both scale and shade, the stepped-back porch was designed as a true outdoor living room. It offers the perfect perch for taking in the countryside, while deep overhangs provide welcome relief from the summer heat.
The connection between the garage and the main home takes the form of a charming breezeway—an architectural nod to traditional country homes. It not only creates a defined arrival moment, but also enhances airflow and passive cooling on warm Texas days.
Positioned directly above the breezeway, the second-floor balcony offers panoramic views while serving as a subtle threshold between the main house and the garage wing. The painted V-groove ceiling with exposed rafters brings texture and warmth to this airy retreat.
At the core of the home, the main entry is clad in painted shiplap and paired with a contrasting stained wood floor and ceiling. Acting as a central hub, it provides seamless access to the kitchen, laundry, powder room, bar, and bunk rooms—balancing openness with clear flow.
Sourced from Round Top, Texas, the antique doors leading to the primary bath offer a rustic counterpoint to the home’s modern farmhouse aesthetic. These repurposed elements bring history, texture, and charm—alongside the practical function of privacy.
Throughout the home, rich material selections stand out against the simplicity of white walls. From antique wood and stone to custom finishes, every detail adds depth and warmth, creating a home that feels grounded and timeless.
The living room serves as the heart of the home—soaring ceilings, exposed beams, and cathedral-style windows create a space that feels both expansive and inviting. Tall, vaulted volumes draw the eye upward, while generous natural light pours in from all directions, enhancing the warmth and character of the materials. Designed for both quiet moments and lively gatherings, this space embodies the home’s balance of rustic charm and refined simplicity.
